Professor Dieter Mersch, the Director of the Cultural Studies Institute at the Zurich Univesity of Arts was invited by the faculty research group, Performativity, to visit our college from 20th to 23rd March. Dieter Mersch is a well-known researcher in Europe who published books on the topics of the linguistic performative and the artistic performance in English and in German. Our research group has already translated an article of his which is available online in the e-journal Performa (issue 2, year 2015).
The Professor delivered a lecture in English titled The Performance and the Power of the Performative and the forthcoming day he had a discussion of his translated paper in German (Performativität, Politik, Gewalt). Besides the members of the faculty research group, students of aesthetics, of modern philology - English Studies BA and German Studies BA -, students of teacher training in Ethics, and English Language and Culture also attended the talks. The Professor was also interested in the artists' work, especially, in the specialisation on Nature Art, and met the artist-teachers at the Institute of the Visual Arts. Moreover, he had the chance to listen to a concert of contemporary music at the Department of Music, consequently, he got acquainted with the performing artist colleagues as well.
The Performativity research group of the faculty intend to keep a lively contact with the guest as they discussed the possibilities of future co-operation in publishing translations and volumes of studies together. The conscious and well-grounded development of the academic international relations at the faculty will also be beneficial in the establishment of the planned interdisciplinary research centre in the humanities.
