A Visit to China

Between November 17th and 24th, an EKU delegation of four (Dr. Kálmán Liptai, Rector of the Eszterházy Károly University, dr. Ilona Dr. Pajtókné Tari, Vice-Rector, Dr. Tamás Tánczos Vice-Dean and Katalin Tayler, Head of the Centre for International Relations) visited China to build partnerships for Eszterházy Károly University. The main purpose of the visit was to promote EKU programmes offered in English.
Eszterházy Károly University has enjoyed a successful partnership with Beijing Union University (BUU) for several years with summer schools being organised both in Eger and Gyöngyös. These three-week courses focused on wine and gastronomy. The University management and the colleagues at international relations gave a warm welcome to their old Hungarian friends and, as it turned out, the EKU summer schools had received a very positive response in China. Based on these discussions and the success of the courses the management of BUU stated that they would warmly welcome the offering of a wider range of single semester courses on other topics likely to be of interest to a Chinese audience in both summer and winter. The parties agreed to cooperate in the fields of oenology, tourism and history / cultural heritage.
Károly Eszterházy University is also developing a fruitful relationship with a Chinese student recruiting agency and they organised visits to several educational institutions in the province of Hebei. The delegation had the opportunity to see two higher education institutions including an arts college, a technical college and a secondary school as well where 20.000 students are currently doing their studies.
As far as the English degree programmes are concerned, the Hungarian delegation and the recruiting agency also considered possible cooperation in the following fields:
• offering Chinese students full-time BA/BSc courses
• providing one year supplementary programmes for college students
• organising MA/MSc courses
• offering a range of courses on life and culture in China and Hungary in the summer and winter breaks
The agency has an extensive network of relationships in the field of education in numerous Chinese provinces. Within the framework of this possible cooperation, potentially approximately 100 self-financing students could study annually at Eszterházy Károly University. To ensure quick and smooth communication, both parties appointed a contact person.
In the next couple of months, the details of this cooperation will be elaborated. We expect a final contract to be signed between the parties at the beginning of 2018. After this the first Chinese students will hopefully arrive for the 2018 / 2019 year in Eger and Gyöngyös.
