Fulbright Day at Eszterházy University

Last modified: 2020. March 12.

On March 6, twenty-five American Fulbright fellows visited our university. The reason for visiting Eszterházy Károly University was two-fold: (1) to give an overview of EKU’s education and research programs to the current American Fulbright scholars; and (2) to learn about the opportunities presented by Fulbright Hungary for graduate students and faculty members.

This particular event was timed well, as we learned not too long before that the Hungarian government had approved the largest allocation of funding to the Hungary-US Fulbright grants program to date since the establishment of the Fulbright Commission in Hungary in 1992. The allocation will increase from the current 250 million forints to 400 million forints by 2022. Its immediate effect is that the amount available for tuition fees for outgoing Hungarian students will increase by 33% already in the 2020-21 academic year, and the monthly salaries for American and Hungarian fellows will increase to a more competitive level.

We were particularly happy to host these prestigious scholars from the United States, because as Acting Rector Dr. Ilona Tari Pajtók mentioned in her greetings: „Visiting Fulbright scholars not only have proven to be substantial contributors to the educational work of the given department but, through their professional commitment to academic and personal excellence, they facilitated the overall development of the University as well."

After the greetings by Acting Rector Dr. Ilona Tari Pajtók and Head of Centre for International Relations Katalin Tayler, Dr. Károly Jókay, Executive Director of Fulbright Hungary, held an information session on the Fulbright Program that is currently accepting applications for the upcoming academic year. Following the briefing that contained information on the requirements for the different scholarships targeting faculty, researchers and students (master and doctoral students), participants could listen to the experience and advice of Hungarian Fulbright fellows working at our university.

During the program, American Fulbright fellows got to know the university building and its rich history and later they had a chance to take a sightseeing tour in our lovely baroque city. They also had a glimpse of the work of the Roma College led by Chandler Fritz, an American Fulbright scholar currently at EKU.

We hope that more and more students and colleagues in our university will apply for this prestigious American scholarship in the near future.
